Unconform

Harnessing the Radical Power of Courage

We humans are wired to be fearful, which explains why so many people never live the life they really want to live. Let’s unpack the idea of fear as a dominant force and focus on courage as our guide to managing fear, so we can live a more fulfilling life.

Life is a shared experience and we have more in common with one another than we think we do; storytelling is our connection with those who have gone before us with courage.

About The Book

The world is ready for all of us to share our unique gifts. In Unconform: Harnessing the Radical Power of Courage, I share my own experience of shifting from a fear based life to one of great courage. You’ll meet people who have tapped into the endless supply of courage we all have, to navigate through their challenges and grow as a result.

You’ll cheer for people you’ve never met who will inspire you with their success stories and you’ll feel connected to people whose courage keeps them thriving in the face of difficulty or loss.

The book is a call to action to stretch what’s possible, so that you can live a beautiful life of your own design.

Are you afraid of succeeding? Is it failing, is it being judged or is it something else? As soon as we understand and accept what we are afraid of and why, we can start to work with it by using courage to stand in the face of fear and take action.

As human beings we need fear to a certain degree to keep us safe. If we had no fear we might take ridiculous risks; we would find ourselves in trouble all the time. Fear really is a marvelous protection and I do appreciate the role it plays in my life, however as I mentioned earlier, we need to be better managers of our “thinking mind” and one of the ways we develop our skills as good managers of our “thinking mind” is by observing how fear operates.

The role fear plays is to keep us safe, but sometimes it works too hard. For example, let’s say that you have a dream that you want to manifest in the world. As soon as you start to think about your dream actually coming to life, fear steps in with thoughts like, “Who do you think you are? You can’t do that. Everyone will judge you because you’re not enough of whatever it is you would need to be or have to make that dream reality.” Fear has done its job to keep you safe and if you listen to that voice your dream will always stay on the other side of fear. We can use courage to bring more of what we want into the world by asking ourselves “what am I afraid of?” When we can identify and name what we’re afraid of, we can begin to diminish the power that fear has over us.

Are you afraid of succeeding? Is it failing, is it being judged or is it something else? As soon as we understand and accept what we are afraid of and why, we can start to work with it by using courage to stand in the face of fear and take action. A great question to ask yourself, to challenge fear is “what’s the worst that could happen?” The worst that could happen is you’ll die. Period; anything else is a bonus. If the coast is clear and you won’t die, ask yourself this: what small step could I take today toward making my dream come to life? There’s always an answer and taking action always produces a result. The result then is something to build upon by asking the same question: what is my next right step or what is something I could do today to bring my dream closer? Using courage to ask these questions, listening to the answer and then taking action is really busting the racket that your “thinking mind” runs to keep you safe; it really is the secret that nobody tells you. The more you practice, the less power fear has over your dreams.

About the author

Kathy Donovan Happiness Expert

Telling the fascinating stories of people who have overcome adversity has been a passion of mine, but it took me a long time to realize that I was living one myself. As a little girl, I was shy with no self-esteem, and I felt very alone until I was invited to be part of a weekly children’s radio show. That’s where I discovered the magic of broadcasting that would lead to a spectacular (40+ years) career in radio and television as an on-air host and producer. Over time I would become known as The “Happiness Expert” –contributing to growing conversations around sustainable happiness and ageless living by writing books, creating podcasts, appearing as guest hosts, producers and speakers on a variety of broadcasting platforms.

Today I still practice what I teach: I am a living and breathing example of the power of gratitude, compassion and forgiveness as a means of reliably pointing us all in happier, healthier directions. I treasure being able to share this wisdom with others on their life adventures (read more)…

Inspiration in Action:

A Woman’s Guide to Happiness

Focuses on the power of our thoughts. Too often we’re focused on the wrong thing: what we don’t have, how we don’t feel worthy or that we haven’t done enough and how afraid we are of taking steps toward our dreams.
